Selchow and Righter The Cadet Guards Target Game with Patented Fred Spring Cannon - An antique target game manufactured by Selchow and Righter of New York. The set includes eight standing soldier targets, one functional spring-loaded cannon, and six projectiles. The soldiers are constructed from lithographed paper on cardboard and are mounted on slotted wooden bases stamped Fred Spring. The cannon consists of a wooden carriage stamped with the letter H and Fred Spring, a metal barrel, and a wooden firing plunger. The projectiles comprise an assortment of glass and stone marbles. The components are housed in the original wooden slide-top storage box featuring chromolithographed paper labels. Manufacturer marks for Selchow and Righter, New York, are present on both the top and end labels of the box. Box width: 4.25 inches Soldier height: 5 to 6 inches. The wooden box exhibits age-related wear and darkening. The top lithographed paper label is significantly damaged, with approximately 30 to 40 percent of the graphic missing on the right side. Chipping and minor losses are present on the end label. The soldier targets show age-toning, light staining, and edge wear, with one figure having a small crease at the top of the shako. The cannon carriage has minor scuffs, and the metal barrel shows surface oxidation. The spring mechanism is intact. Marbles show surface wear and small chips consistent with use.
