A Collection of 19th Century Tintypes - This collection consists of a diverse grouping of approximately 19th-century portrait photographs, primarily featuring tintypes (ferrotypes). The subject matter is characteristic of Victorian-era studio portraiture, depicting a wide range of men, women, children, and infants. Notable subjects include a set of twins in matching striped outfits and individuals in formal mourning attire. The photographs are presented in various formats, including loose metal plates, embossed paper mats, and decorative card mounts. One tan paper mount bears the embossed text POTTER'S PATENT MARCH 7, 1865. At least two images are housed in decorative frames or cases, including one with an ornate gilt-metal mat in a wood case. Faint, illegible pencil notations are present on the reverse or margins of several card mounts. Condition across the collection is varied. Tintypes exhibit widespread surface scratches, dents, oxidation, rust spots, and significant emulsion flaking, notably at the edges. Albumen prints and card mounts show foxing, yellowing, toning, water staining, and clipped corners. Cased and framed items show surface grime and dust under the glass, while the cases show edge wear and loss of finish.
