Civil War Union Corporal Carte-de-visite Photograph by J. M. Clark Syracuse New York - An original Civil War era carte-de-visite photograph of a seated Union Army corporal. The subject is wearing a forage cap and a dark enlisted man’s coat with a high button count, which is characteristic of musician's patterns or specific New York state militia jackets. Two rank chevrons are visible on his sleeve. The soldier is posed with his left hand resting on a table with a floral-patterned cloth. The reverse of the card contains the printed photographer's mark: PHOTOGRAPHED BY J. M. CLARK, Cor. Church & Salina Sts., SYRACUSE, N. Y. Width: 2.4 inches. The card shows general toning and yellowing consistent with age. Foxing spots are present on both the front and back of the mount. A visible brown stain is located at the top center of the image. The corners show minor rounding and wear. The photographic image remains relatively sharp with good contrast.
