American Civil War Sixth Plate Union Soldier Tintype in Original Case - A mid-19th-century sixth-plate tintype portrait of a Union Army soldier from the American Civil War era. The subject is depicted from the chest up, wearing a standard issue four-button flannel fatigue blouse and a forage cap. A brass Company E insignia is mounted to the front of the cap. The portrait features light hand-tinting on the cheeks. The image is secured behind glass with an oval brass mat and a decorative preserver. It is housed in its original wood-framed case covered in embossed leatherette. The interior of the lid is fitted with a padded red velvet liner featuring an embossed floral motif. 3 inches x 2.5 inches. The image remains clear with good contrast, displaying some surface dust and minor oxidation spots typical of its age. The case hinge is broken, and the two halves are completely separated. The exterior leatherette covering shows significant shelf wear, rubbing, and loss along the edges and corners. The brass components exhibit a natural age patina and tarnish. The red velvet interior lining is well-preserved with some minor fading.
