A Group of Mid-19th Century Daguerreotype and Early Process Portraits - This collection includes several mid-19th century portraits, featuring primarily daguerreotypes. The group consists of formal studio depictions of men and women in various presentations, including three complete single cases, one double case containing two portraits, and three standalone plate-and-mat assemblies. The daguerreotype plates are sixth-plate size and feature reflective surfaces typical of the process. One portrait, characterized by a non-reflective surface and extensive surface scratching, appears to be a tintype. The portraits are housed within stamped brass mats with decorative patterns. The outer cases are made of embossed leather or paper over wood, featuring intricate floral, foliate, and scrollwork designs. No maker marks or signatures are visible on the plates or cases. Single case measures approximately 3 3/4 inches by 3 1/4 inches. Plates show varying degrees of oxidation and silvering, particularly at the margins. One portrait has significant horizontal surface scratches across the image area. Cases show moderate to heavy wear including scuffing, edge deterioration, and split hinges. Some brass closure clasps are missing. Three portraits are missing their cases and are presented as glass, mat, and plate assemblies only. Dust and debris are visible under some cover glass. Foxing and wear are present on the velvet interior liners.
