Bidspirit auction | An Antique Hand-Painted Wooden Folk

An Antique Hand-Painted Wooden Folk Art Hanging Wall Pocket - A wooden hanging wall pocket or salt box featuring a decoratively scalloped backboard with a central circular hanging aperture and a tapered, trapezoidal front bin. The object is finished in a dark reddish-brown paint and embellished with hand-painted polychrome folk art decoration. The central motif consists of stylized floral sprays, notably including two large, lobed fruit-like forms in yellow and black, interspersed with smaller daisies and foliage in red and yellow tones. The front panel is outlined with a painted border. The construction utilizes thin wood panels joined with small nails visible along the side and bottom edges. No maker marks, signatures, or labels are present on the exterior, interior, or reverse of the object. Top width of front panel: 7 inches. A vertical crack is present in the upper backboard, extending through the hanging hole (Photo 1); this has been reinforced on the reverse with a narrow strip of material (Photo 5). There is significant wear and paint loss throughout the decorated surfaces, particularly along the rim of the bin and the edges of the backboard (Photo 1, 4, 6). General surface abrasions, minor wood chipping, and a dark aged patina are visible (Photo 2, 3). The interior and reverse show accumulated surface grime (Photo 4, 5).
