Mata Ortiz Blackware Geometric Pottery Jar - A hand-coiled earthenware jar crafted in the Mata Ortiz tradition of Chihuahua, Mexico. The vessel features a globular form with a wide shoulder and a short, flared rim. The exterior is decorated using the black-on-black technique, characterized by a highly stone-polished black ground and matte black slip ornamentation. The decorative program consists of complex geometric panels, fine-line hatching, and stylized leaf or feather motifs. The interior is unglazed. The base features an incised signature that is currently illegible. Diameter: approximately 7 inches. The jar is in good overall condition. There are scattered surface scuffs and light scratches to the polished finish throughout the body and base consistent with age and handling. No chips, cracks, or evidence of professional repair were observed.
