N.A. White and Son Utica New York Two Gallon Cobalt Blue Decorated Stoneware Crock - This salt glazed stoneware crock was manufactured by N.A. White and Son of Utica, New York. The vessel features a cylindrical form with a flared, rounded rim and two applied side lug handles. The exterior surface is finished in a traditional salt glaze, while the interior is coated in a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze. The front of the crock is impressed with the maker mark N.A. WHITE & SON / UTICA, N.Y. on two lines. Below the location is an impressed numeral 2 indicating capacity, flanked by two curved, wing-like flourishes. The primary decoration consists of a large, stylized foliate or floral motif executed in brushed cobalt blue slip. Capacity: 2 gallons. The crock shows two notable stone pops on the front body below the cobalt decoration, where mineral inclusions popped during the kiln firing. One lug handle has a small chip on its upper edge. The base rim exhibits minor scattered nicks and general roughness. There is a dark, curved surface mark on the underside of the base that does not appear to be a structural crack. The piece shows general surface staining, minor pitting, and wear throughout consistent with age and use.
