A.O. Whittemore Havana NY Two Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration - This is a 19th century salt glazed stoneware crock manufactured by Alvin O. Whittemore in Havana, New York. The vessel is straight sided with an everted rim and two applied lug handles. The exterior features a salt glaze finish while the interior is coated in a dark brown Albany slip. The front of the crock is ornamented with a stylized cobalt blue slip trailed decoration depicting a bird perched on a scrolling branch. It is impressed with a two line maker mark reading A.O.WHITTEMORE. over HAVANA. N.Y. with an incised numeral 2 indicating a two gallon capacity. Capacity: 2 gallons. The rim displays multiple shallow chips along both the interior and exterior edges. There is localized brown staining and iron spotting visible on the body, particularly on the reverse side and near the base. The unglazed underside shows typical kiln marks and light surface wear. No major structural cracks or hairlines are visible.
