Large Victorian German Embossed Die-Cut Halloween Devil Wall Decoration - A large-format embossed cardboard die-cut scrap produced in Germany during the late 19th or early 20th century. This piece features a menacing devil figure with reddish-brown skin, pointed ears, horns, and fangs. The figure is detailed with black hair on its head and chest, a shaggy black loincloth, and holds a long black pitchfork while standing amidst stylized black flames. The heavy embossing creates a pronounced three-dimensional texture across the musculature and hair. The lower right edge of the flame base features the vertically impressed mark GERMANY. The reverse is unfinished tan cardstock showing the negative of the embossed design. This scale of die-cut was typically intended for use as a retail store display or prominent seasonal home decoration. Height: Approximately 19.5 inches. Fair condition. The piece has a complete break at the left wrist. A section of the upper right horn and flame is detached but present. Widespread surface crazing and fine cracking are visible across the lithographed surface, consistent with the age of the materials and the drying of inks on an embossed substrate. There are scattered scuffs and small losses to the pigment, especially on raised areas and along the die-cut edges.
