Hand-Knotted Afghan Turkmen Style Wool Rug with Bokhara Design - This hand-knotted wool area rug features a traditional Afghan Turkmen style design, often referred to as a Bokhara or Tekke pattern. The central field is a deep rust-red tone, decorated with eight primary octagonal medallions known as elephant foot guls, arranged in two columns of four. The guls and secondary diamond-shaped geometric motifs are rendered in a palette of indigo blue, cream, and tan. The rug is framed by a multi-layered border system consisting of a main border with repeating geometric diamond patterns and narrow guard stripes with zigzag motifs. The piece is constructed with a wool pile on a wool foundation and finished with a self-fringe at both ends. Width: approximately 61 - 62 inches Length: approximately 81 - 82 inches (including fringe). The rug is in good overall condition with moderate wear consistent with age and use. The wool pile shows general surface wear throughout and is low in some areas. There is significant wear and unevenness to the fringe at both ends with some losses visible. Natural variations in dye, known as abrash, are present. Minor surface soiling is visible.
