Pacific Northwest Coast Handwoven Lidded Trinket Basket - A small, circular lidded trinket basket attributed to the Makah or Nuu-chah-nulth people of the Pacific Northwest Coast. The item is constructed using a wrapped twining technique over a cedar bark or bundle fiber core. The decorative motifs consist of concentric bands of geometric step-and-block patterns rendered in natural and aniline-dyed bear grass. The exterior dyed fibers exhibit a muted teal tone due to light exposure over time, while the interior retains a more saturated deep blue color. The base is worked in a flat, natural-toned spiral weave. No maker marks or signatures are visible. Height: approx. 2 inches Diameter: approx. 3.5 inches. The basket is in generally good condition with structural integrity maintained. There is a notable area of loss to the woven edge of the lid rim measuring approximately 0.5 inches in length. The exterior shows expected light-fading to the dyed fibers and minor surface soiling consistent with mid-20th-century age and display.
