American Folk Art Hooked Wool Rug with Butterfly Motif - An antique American folk art hooked rug featuring a large central butterfly motif, similar to a Peacock butterfly, executed in red, orange, teal, and dark brown. The butterfly is surrounded by a scrolling border of floral vines with stylized red blossoms and variegated green leaves, all set against a cream-colored field. The rug is framed by an inner border of olive green and a wide outer border of dark brown. The construction consists of hand-hooked wool or fabric strips on a coarse burlap or jute foundation. The edges are finished with a tan-colored fabric binding tape. A rectangular burlap patch is stitched to the reverse, centered behind the butterfly motif. No maker's marks or signatures are present. Length: 35 inches Width: 25 inches. The rug is in fair condition with signs of age and use. There is a prominent hole approximately 1 inch in diameter in the center of the butterfly motif, penetrating the burlap foundation. A previous repair is visible on the reverse in the form of a burlap patch. There is general thinning of the pile, light surface soiling, and minor fraying along the fabric edge binding. The colors remain vibrant.
