Bidspirit auction | Native American Indian Coiled Pine
Native American Indian Coiled Pine Needle Lidded Basket - This small globular basket is constructed using a coiled technique with a bundled pine needle foundation and split-leaf or raffia stitching. The vessel features a fitted, slightly domed lid. Both the lid and the base of the basket possess a central circular aperture with radiating stitches, known as a buttonhole start. The exterior is decorated with geometric chevron and triangular patterns achieved through alternating bands of natural tan and dyed reddish-purple fibers. One side of the body includes a small coiled ring handle, while the opposite side retains a frayed fiber loop. The interior construction mirrors the exterior coils. Diameter: 4 inches Height: 4 inches. The basket is in good vintage condition. There is visible fraying and minor loss to the decorative stitching, particularly along the rim of the base and the edges of the lid. The side ring handle and opposing loop show significant wear and fraying. Colors show mild fading consistent with age. The structural coils are intact and sound.
