Antique Southwest Persian Tribal Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, Attributed to Qashqai or Khamseh - This hand-knotted tribal rug is a Southwest Persian production, characteristic of the Qashqai or Khamseh Confederacy tribes. The piece features a large, central stepped hexagonal medallion on a cream field. The field is densely populated with stylized geometric motifs, including human figures, quadrupeds (likely goats or dogs), and various floral and celestial symbols. Dark brown spandrels at the corners are decorated with bold, multi-petaled rose motifs. The primary border consists of repeating geometric floral forms on a deep blue ground, framed by a narrow rose-colored inner border and a simple brown outer border. It is constructed with a wool pile on a wool foundation using a medium-coarse tribal weave. A vintage paper service tag from Megerian Rug Cleaners, Inc. of Brooklyn, NY, numbered 3415, is attached to the edge. A small, heavily degraded fabric tag is sewn to one corner on the reverse, with no legible markings remaining. 37 in. x 56 in. Fair to poor condition. The rug exhibits significant overall pile wear, with substantial areas worn down to the foundation, particularly in the central field. There are significant losses to the fringe at both ends, with fraying extending into the pile. The side selvages show wear and fraying in several sections. Minor surface staining and general soiling are present throughout, consistent with age and heavy use.
