Antique Caucasian Tribal Soumak Flat-Weave Rug - This tribal flat-woven rug is constructed using the soumak extra-weft wrapping technique, which creates a textured and heavy surface. The design features an all-over geometric composition of staggered rows of repeating hooked diamond medallions. The color palette consists of a terracotta red field with motifs rendered in indigo blue, natural ivory, and various muted earth tones. The main border displays a repeating stylized geometric running dog pattern, flanked by narrow guard stripes. Both ends of the rug terminate in wide, multi-colored striped flat-weave panels known as elem. The rug is hand-woven using hand-spun wool on a wool foundation. A small, illegible paper inventory tag is visible in one corner. Width: 36.5 inches Length: 65.5 inches. The rug is in fair to poor antique condition, showing significant signs of age and tribal use. Several notable holes and areas of heavy wear are present within the central field. The selvedges show significant fraying and loss of original binding. The flat-weave end panels are worn with significant loss and uneven fringe. There is general surface fading, color variation known as abrash, and evidence of light staining and soiling throughout.
