S. Newhouse pre-Oneida No. 5 Slick Pan Bear Trap with Rare Cast Serrated Teeth - An antique S. Newhouse pre-Oneida No. 5 slick pan bear trap featuring rare cast iron segregated teeth. The teeth were cast at the same time as the jaws. The trap is constructed of heavy iron or steel and utilizes a double longspring mechanism. According to provided information, the springs were changed historically. The central circular trigger mechanism is of the slick pan variety, lacking visible manufacturer stamps. Attached to the body is a heavy-gauge iron chain terminating in a large, hand-forged swivel. The surface exhibits a dark, aged patina with significant pitting. A wooden yardstick included in the images indicates the following dimensions. Jaw spread: approximately 9.5 inches Total width: approximately 34 inches. The metal surfaces show significant overall oxidation and heavy pitting consistent with age and exposure. The springs were replaced a long time ago. The trap appears structurally complete with a patch of worn white paint or residue on one spring. Mechanical functionality has not been tested.
