National Biscuit Company R. Ovens Bakery Wood Crate Buffalo New York - An antique wooden shipping and display crate for The R. Ovens Bakery of Buffalo, New York, a subsidiary of the National Biscuit Company (NBC). The crate features a hinged lid and is adorned with original multi-color lithographed paper labels on the exterior front, the underside of the lid, and one side panel. The primary labels prominently display the company name and products including Cakes, Crackers, and Biscuits, with the business address listed as 217 to 225 Ellicott St., Buffalo, N.Y. Central to the design is a circular trade mark featuring a bison head. A red circular seal for the National Biscuit Company with an eagle motif is located in the lower right of the main labels. The printer mark for Robert Gair N.Y. is visible in the bottom right corner of the lid label. A side label provides shipping instructions, reading Handle With Care, These Goods Are Easily Broken. The interior of the crate is unfinished wood. The construction consists of nailed wood panels with metal hinges and wire fasteners. Width: 14.5 inches Depth: 10.5 inches Height: 11 inches. Fair to good antique condition. The paper labels exhibit significant age-related wear, including surface losses, chipping at the edges, peeling, and darkening. The interior lid label is more complete than the exterior front label. The wooden structure shows general darkening, surface dirt, scuffs, and scratches. There is a notable horizontal split in the wood on the upper portion of the right side panel. Metal hardware shows surface oxidation and rust.
