Wightman & Hough Co. Gold-Filled Engraved Locket Pendant - A circular gold-filled locket pendant featuring a hand-engraved Spencerian script monogram on the front face, which appears to read SMB. The reverse side is unadorned and polished. The locket opens on a side hinge to reveal two internal compartments designed for photographs; the right side retains a metal bezel and a transparent protective cover. The interior left face is impressed with a mark inside a circular strike containing a heart-shaped border. Inside the heart, the characters are transcribed exactly as W, &, H on the top line and C, o on the bottom line. This mark identifies the piece as a product of the Wightman & Hough Company of Providence, Rhode Island. Diameter is approximately 1 1/8 inches. The exterior reverse side exhibits significant fine surface scratching and abrasions throughout (photo 2). Moderate wear to the gold-filled layer is present, particularly visible at the outer edges and the hinge where the darker base metal is exposed (photo 4). The interior right compartment contains a transparent cover, while the left compartment is currently empty and lacks a cover (photo 4). General light tarnishing is present throughout the piece consistent with age.
