Bidspirit auction | Hand Carved Shell Cameo Brooch

Hand Carved Shell Cameo Brooch and Pendant with Twisted Rope Border - This hand-carved two-layer shell cameo functions as both a brooch and a pendant. The relief carving depicts a classical profile portrait of a woman, possibly a Bacchante, featuring a cluster of grapes and vine leaves intricately coiffed into her hair. The creamy-white figure is set against a slightly darker off-white shell ground. The cameo is housed in a silver-toned metal frame featuring a decorative twisted rope-style border. The reverse of the piece is equipped with a horizontal pin and a simple C-clasp, along with a fixed bail at the top of the frame for wear as a pendant. No maker marks, signatures, or metal fineness hallmarks are visible on the frame, hardware, or shell. While the metal appears silver-toned, the composition is unverified and could be sterling silver or a silver-plated base metal; professional testing is recommended to confirm metal content. The shell shows natural growth lines and undulations on the reverse side. Height: 1.5 inches (38 mm). The shell carving remains in good condition with no visible cracks or chips to the relief (photo 1). Significant surface dirt and dark debris are present within the recessed areas of the coiffure and drapery (photo 8). The reverse of the shell shows dark staining and residue along the inner edge of the bezel (photo 4). The silver-toned frame exhibits heavy tarnish and oxidation throughout (photos 4, 5, and 6). The pin stem is slightly bent (photo 6), though it remains functional. The C-clasp and pendant bail are intact.
