Bidspirit auction | A Collection of US Indian
A Collection of US Indian Head Cents - A collection of US one-cent coins, known as Indian Head cents. Struck in a bronze composition, the obverse of each specimen features a left-facing profile of Liberty wearing a feathered headdress, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the year of mintage at the bottom. The reverse depicts the denomination ONE CENT within an oak wreath tied with a ribbon, surmounted by a small shield. Identifiable dates within the group include 1864, 1891, 1899, 1902, 1904, 1905, and 1907. The 1864 coin is a semi-key date from the year the mint transitioned from copper-nickel to bronze planchets. The coins are in heavily circulated, cull condition. Significant wear is present across the collection, with substantial loss of detail in the feathers, hair, and legends (photo 1). Widespread environmental damage is evident, including heavy green verdigris (photos 4, 8), dark brown toning, surface pitting, and encrusted oxidation (photos 5, 9). Some coins show significant surface debris that obscures portions of the design (photos 2, 7).
