US 1874-S Silver Trade Dollar - A US silver Trade Dollar dated 1874 produced at the San Francisco Mint. The coin is composed of silver as indicated by the reverse inscription 420 GRAINS 900 FINE. The obverse design features a seated figure of Liberty on a bale of merchandise holding an olive branch, with the date 1874 at the base and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll. The reverse depicts an eagle with outstretched wings, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM on a scroll, and the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TRADE DOLLAR. A single impressed letter S mint mark is located on the reverse above the word DOLLAR. Trade Dollars were authorized by the Coinage Act of 1873 primarily for use in commerce with East Asia. Weight: 0.817 ozt. The coin exhibits significant circulation wear consistent with a grade of good to very good, with flattened high points on the figure of Liberty (photo 2) and the eagle (photo 3). Numerous light scratches and scuffs are visible across the fields on both the obverse and reverse (photo 2). Uneven dark toning is present along the rims (photo 1). The measured weight of 0.817 ozt (photo 4) is below the standard specification of approximately 0.875 ozt.
