1833 Upper Canada 1/2 Penny Token - An 1833 copper alloy half penny token from Upper Canada. The obverse displays a central agricultural plow design. The surrounding rim is struck with the legend TO FACILITATE TRADE and the date 1833 at the bottom. The reverse features a sailing sloop or schooner in the center. The upper rim is struck with the legend HALFPENNY TOKEN and the lower rim reads UPPER CANADA. The coin is housed in a white cardboard and plastic window holder with a handwritten ink notation reading 1833 - 1/2p token and UPPER CANADA. Diameter: approximately 28 mm. The token is in circulated condition with significant wear to the high relief areas of the plow on the obverse (photo 1) and the sails of the vessel on the reverse (photo 5). The surfaces exhibit dark, uneven toning and multiple small scratches and contact marks throughout, most notably across the plow (photo 2). The inscriptions remain legible despite the wear.
