Flanders Billon Double Mite, Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy - A medieval billon coin issued for the County of Flanders under the authority of Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy (r. 1363 to 1404). The obverse features a central heraldic shield quartered with the arms of Valois-Burgundy, displaying alternating fleurs-de-lis and lions rampant within a beaded border. The obverse legend consists of readable characters + PHILIPVS DVX BVRG. The reverse depicts a lion rampant facing left, enclosed within a lobed border. The reverse legend consists of readable characters + MONETA IN FLAND. The coin is struck in billon, a low-grade silver alloy. The coin is in a circulated state with significant wear consistent with its age. There is substantial flattening and loss of detail on the central motifs, particularly the lion's torso and the lower quadrants of the heraldic shield (photo 1 and photo 2). The surfaces exhibit a dull silver-gray tone with pervasive darker oxidation, scattered micro-pitting, and surface marks throughout. The strike is slightly off-center on the reverse (photo 2). The legend remains partially legible despite peripheral wear and clipping.
