Sterling Silver Marcasite Flower Basket Openwork Brooch - An oval sterling silver brooch featuring a central giardinetti or flower basket motif. The pierced-metal design includes a central basket overflowing with flowers, each set with a gray rose-cut marcasite stone. The central motif is surrounded by a wide border of intricate scrolling floral and foliate filigree patterns. The metal has an intentionally oxidized finish on the front to provide contrast for the gemstones. The reverse inner rim features an impressed mark reading STERLING. A horizontal pin stem is attached to the reverse with a circular hinge and secured by a rolling-over safety clasp. 1.5 inches wide at the widest point. Weight: 0.146 ozt. The brooch is in very good vintage condition. All six marcasite stones are present and securely set (photo 1). The silver shows characteristic surface tarnish and oxidation, particularly on the reverse (photo 3, 4). The pin mechanism is functional and the safety clasp closes securely (photo 3).
