Elgin National Watch Co Grade 181 Gold-Filled Hunting Case Pocket Watch Size 6s Does Not Run - This is an Elgin National Watch Company hunting case pocket watch featuring a Grade 181 manual wind movement with 11 jewels. The movement is marked with serial number 8888478 and includes a safety pinion. The timepiece is housed in a gold-filled hunter case manufactured by the Essex Watch Case Company under the Columbia trademark, case number 31618. The case is constructed of two plates of solid 14 karat gold with a hard composition center, originally guaranteed for 20 years. The exterior displays elaborate hand-engraved designs, including a hummingbird among flowers on one cover and a blank shield-form cartouche surrounded by floral patterns on the reverse. The interior lid retains the original paper warranty label signed by J.B. Hoogland. The white enamel dial is signed Elgin and features Roman numeral hour markers and a subsidiary seconds dial at the 6 o'clock position. Case size: 1.5 inches. The watch does not run and requires professional mechanical service and repair. The dial exhibits significant surface grime and spotting, particularly near the center arbor. The hands are missing, with only a small detached fragment visible. The movement shows visible dust and surface oxidation. The gold-filled case shows fine surface scratches and minor wear to the gold layer on high-relief points of the engraving. The hinges and latch are functional. The internal paper label shows yellowing and edge wear consistent with age.
