Elgin National Watch Co. Size 18s Open-Face Pocket Watch with Lever-Set Movement - This antique Elgin National Watch Co. pocket watch features an 18-size manual wind movement in an open-face ”sidewinder” configuration, with the winding stem positioned at 3 o'clock. The movement is lever-set, with the setting lever visible near the 2 o'clock position when the bezel is removed. The movement plates exhibit a damaskeened finish and include blued steel screws and a safety pinion. The movement is engraved with the serial number 2239387 and marked Elgin Ill. The white enamel dial is designed with black Roman numeral hour markers and a subsidiary seconds dial. The watch is housed in a nickel base metal case manufactured by the Illinois Watch Case Co., marked with serial number 2211622 and the stamp NICKEL ELGIN U.S.A. on the interior. This timepiece requires a replacement mainspring for operation. Hand-scratched jeweler service marks are present on the interior case back. Case Diameter: Approximately 2 inches. The white enamel dial shows multiple hairline cracks across the surface, particularly radiating from the center and near the 4 o'clock and 11 o'clock positions. The nickel case exhibits significant surface wear and scratches throughout, including a prominent circular area of wear-through on the back cover where the base metal is exposed. The gold-tone winding crown shows moderate wear to the knurling. The movement is currently non-functional and requires a mainspring; working order is otherwise untested and professional restoration is recommended.
