Waltham 8-Day Automobile Dash Clock for J.F. O'Brien Mfg. Co. New York City circa 1919 - This is a mechanical manual-wind 8-day automobile dashboard clock manufactured by the Waltham Watch Company. The piece was retailed by or produced for the J.F. O'Brien Manufacturing Company of New York City, as evidenced by the dual naming on the dial. The cream-colored dial features black Arabic numerals, an outer dotted minute track, and black spade-style hands. Below the center arbor, it is marked WALTHAM 8 DAYS and U.S.A. at the bottom edge. The top of the dial is marked J.F. OBRIEN MFG. CO. NEW YORK CITY in an arched format. The clock is housed in a circular nickel-plated or brass case with a screw-off back. At the 6 o'clock position, a short mounting stem terminates in a large fluted winding and setting crown, a design intended for dashboard installation. The interior movement plate is engraved WALTHAM WATCH CO. 8 DAYS and bears the serial number 22703528, which dates the production to approximately 1919. The movement includes a regulator marked S and F. Case diameter: 2.5 inches Total height including stem and crown: 3.5 inches. The case shows significant surface wear, tarnish, and a heavy patina consistent with age and automotive use. The glass crystal has surface scratches and dust accumulation on the interior.
