1896 Mettlach Villeroy and Boch Beer Stein No. 2129 Prosit Gnomes Scene - Mettlach (Villeroy and Boch) 1/2 liter capacity lidded beer stein featuring a multi-color print-under-glaze illustration. The central scene depicts whimsical gnomes or dwarfs in a garden setting accompanied by birds and vegetables, specifically radishes and carrots. The front panel displays the traditional German toast Prosit! in stylized black script. The ceramic body is finished in a cream glaze, accented by textured, wheat-motif decorative bands framing the central illustration and bands of green and tan glaze at the foot. The handle features a scalloped, textured design finished in green and tan glazes. The domed pewter lid is tiered with embossed decorative patterns and is surmounted by a figural thumb lift in the shape of a gnome's head. The underside of the base contains several markings including the incised Mettlach abbey tower symbol, the VB circular logo, METTLACH, the model number 2129, the production year code 96 indicating 1896, and the number 10. A blue stamp on the base reads 196 over GES. GESCH. indicating a legally protected design. The capacity mark 1/2L is incised near the upper rim of the body. This item is in very good antique condition. The ceramic body shows no visible chips, cracks, or structural repairs. The interior white glaze is clean with minor crazing consistent with age. The pewter lid and figural thumb lift exhibit a natural aged patina and remain securely attached with a functional hinge. The transfer-printed graphics remain vibrant and clear.
