Mid-19th Century American Salt-Glazed Stoneware Storage Jar with Cobalt Blue Floral Decoration - This is an American salt-glazed stoneware storage jar dating from the mid-19th century. The vessel is of cylindrical form, featuring a slightly rounded, everted rim and a recessed shoulder. It is decorated with two hand-painted, stylized floral or leaf motifs in cobalt blue slip applied to the shoulder. Each motif consists of a central stem with four radiating, elongated petals. The exterior displays the characteristic orange peel texture of a salt-glazed finish. The interior is finished with a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze. No impressed maker marks, capacity numbers, or stamps are visible on the exterior, interior rim, or base. The potting and decoration style are characteristic of stoneware produced in the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Height: 10 1/4 inches Rim Diameter: 6 1/4 inches. The jar exhibits condition issues consistent with age and domestic use. There are several small chips and flaking along the top and inner edges of the rim. The exterior body shows multiple rust-colored stains and yellowish-brown kiln-related fry marks. Scattered firing pits and surface irregularities are present. The base shows light surface wear and minor nicks along the bottom edge. No structural cracks or significant repairs were observed in the provided images.
