Late 19th Century Victorian Crazy Quilt Signed A. Sampfer and Dated 1898 - An American Victorian crazy quilt constructed from an asymmetrical patchwork of various high-end textiles, including figured silks, satins, velvets, and brocades in various colors, stripes, and plaids. The irregular fabric pieces are joined with multicolored decorative embroidery in various styles, including feather, herringbone, and cross-stitching. The perimeter is finished with a border of pieced triangles and a red satin ribbon binding. Small embroidered floral and leaf motifs are scattered throughout the patches. The reverse is composed of four panels of light blue floral-printed cotton fabric. In the bottom left corner, the quilt is signed A Sampfer in white thread and dated 1898 in pink thread. The upper left corner features a presentation inscription embroidered in silver, pink, and yellow reading To Hile Love Mama. 80 inches x 62.5 inches. Fair antique condition. There is significant shredding and fabric loss to several of the silk patches, particularly the black and dark-colored pieces, which is characteristic of weighted silk from the period. The velvet patches and embroidery stitches remain largely intact. The red ribbon binding shows edge wear, minor fraying, and small areas of loss. The cotton backing shows minor discoloration and light staining consistent with age and use.
