Victorian Mother-of-Pearl and Gold-Filled Souvenir Pen, Rockaway Beach, N.Y. - This late 19th-century Victorian writing instrument featuring a carved mother-of-pearl handle and a gold-colored metal barrel. The handle is tapered with flat sides. One side is hand-inscribed with script in black pigment that reads Rockaway Beach, N.Y., identifying it as a regional souvenir from Queens, New York. The reverse side of the mother-of-pearl handle features hand-carved decorative motifs including geometric hatching and stylized fronds. The metal barrel, likely gold-filled or gold-plated brass, is decorated with two sections of knurled barleycorn engine-turning for enhanced grip. The instrument employs a sliding mechanical mechanism to extend and retract the lead. No manufacturer hallmarks or maker marks are visible on the metal components. Length: 4.75 inches.
