Hampden Watch Co. Wm McKinley Grade 17 Jewel Pocket Watch - An antique open-face pocket watch manufactured by the Hampden Watch Co. of Canton, Ohio. The movement is a 17 jewel, manual wind mechanical type, grade ”Wm McKinley,” featuring damaskeened bridge plates, a safety pinion, and is marked ”ADJUSTED.” The movement serial number is 1791563. The watch is housed in an Illinois Watch Case Co. ”Spartan” nickel-silver alloy case with a screw-off back. The exterior of the case back displays vertical engine-turned engraving surrounding an unengraved shield-shaped cartouche. The interior of the case back is stamped with the manufacturer mark, the grade ”SPARTAN,” and the serial number 0149730. Several hand-etched watchmaker service marks are visible on the interior. The off-white enamel dial features black Roman numeral hour markers, a subsidiary seconds dial at the 6 o'clock position, and an outer minute track with black hash marks and red Arabic numerals at five-minute intervals. The dial is signed Hampden Watch Co. and CANTON, OHIO. The watch is equipped with ornate black spade-style hour and minute hands and a gold-toned crown. Case diameter: 2 inches (50.8 mm). This watch does not run. The enamel dial shows visible age-related wear, including several hairline cracks most prominent between the 7 and 9 o'clock positions, as well as minor surface foxing. The nickel-silver case exhibits moderate surface scratching and wear consistent with age and use. The gold-toned crown shows significant brassing where the base metal is visible. The crystal is present but shows yellowing and surface grime. The movement appears complete and clean with well-preserved damaskeening but is sold as-is for parts or restoration.
