Mounted Armorial Wax Seal of William V Prince of Orange Dated 1777 - This item is a large armorial wax seal of William V, Prince of Orange (Willem V Batavus), dated 1777. The seal is composed of deep red wax and is mounted to a square tan cardboard support. The heraldic design features a central quarterly shield with an inescutcheon, surrounded by the Order of the Garter and the motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. The shield is supported by two crowned lions rampant and is surmounted by a royal crown. A ribbon below the shield bears the House of Orange-Nassau motto JE MAINTIENDRAI. An outer Latin inscription on the seal reads SIGILLUM GULIELMI... AURIAECI ET NAS PRINCIPIS. The cardboard mount contains extensive handwritten identification in black ink, including the date Aº 1777 and the name Willem V Prins. The mount also features a transcription of the seal's Latin titles and mottos. William V (1748–1806) was the last Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic and a member of the British Order of the Garter.
