The Boys' Book of Locomotives by J. R. Howden, 1909 - A vintage hardcover book titled ”The Boys' Book of Locomotives” by J. R. Howden, published in 1909 by Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York. Printing was carried out by Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. in Edinburgh. The book features a dark green/grey cloth cover with gilt lettering on the spine. It contains over one hundred black and white photographic illustrations depicting various locomotive types. Internal markings include ”Woburn Public Library” stamps, accession numbers (16548, cop.2), and a ”DISCARDED BY” stamp, indicating its former life as a circulating library volume established in 1856. An interior dedication reads ”TO MY SON ERIC” and features a Greek quote from Xenophon's Hiero, Book VIII, Section 9, which translates to ”When there is need for speed, whether on foot or by sea, one must not be slow-witted.” Height: 7.5 inches
