Provenance: George Scheiner & Son Antiques, Newark, NJ, November 17, 1987 Sight: 29 1/2 x 24 1/2 in. (74.9 x 62.2 cm.), Frame: 37 3/4 x 32 3/4 in. (95.9 x 83.2 cm.) Condition: Verso of frame marked in chalk “Foulke 19462”. Also has a painted number 1856 (possibly a collection identifier). Relined. U.V. inspection revealed scattered retouch. Some on sitter’s left side of face visible to naked eye. Some near sitter’s right earlobe and just below. Retouch along left edge and heaviest on coat. There is also a heavy layer of varnish. Painting signed and dated 1786 lower left. Paint is thin and some retouch in upper left and lower right. Scattered light surface abrasion. Retouch also on chin/cravat.
