American Redware Creamer / Small Pitcher with Applied Bird Decorations - American Redware Creamer / Small Pitcher with Applied Bird Decorations Red earthenware with reddish-brown lead glaze accentuated by dripped/dotted manganese embellishments; high-shouldered compressed globular form with flaring rim, remains of an applied handle with incised decoration around the lower terminal, and a small unglazed foot. Additionally decorated with two hand-modeled birds: one sculpted/incised and applied below the spout, the other composed of carefully-arranged strings of clay applied on the right side of the body. Possibly Pennsylvania. First half 19th century. Dimensions: 4 1/4” H, 2 1/4” D foot. Condition: Missing handle. Additionally having heavy overall wear including minor chipping to foot, two chips around collar, minor losses to applied decoration, and heavy exfoliation/glaze loss to top surface of rim. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Catalogue Note: The dripped/dotted manganese decoration looks a bit like initials, presumably those of the potter. Unfortunately, they cannot be deciphered. The piece appears to be a left-handed creamer as shown by the placement of its applied decorations - the birds would face the owner only if it was poured using one's left hand. The breaks are worn smooth where the handle used to be, indicating the piece continued to be used long after its handle broke off. These traits suggest a specially made piece, with great sentimental value to the owner - possibly made by the potter for their own use, or for a loved one.
