Signed S. Bell & Sons (Strasburg, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia) Redware Jardiniere / Flower Vase - Signed S. Bell & Sons (Strasburg, Shenandoah Valley of Virginia) Redware Jardiniere / Flower Vase Red earthenware with white slip wash and copper-glazed embellishments, squat baluster form with extensive stamped decoration in bands around the body including ovals, leaves, and rosettes, hole punched through underside within a protruding round lower flange. Incised ”S Bell Sons” to neck at front and ”S Bell & Sons” to underside. Late 19th century. Dimensions: 8 1/2” H, 7 1/2” D rim, 3 5/8” D outer edge of lower flange/fitter on underside. Condition: As-found condition with numerous flaws including hairlines and surface cracking, severe glaze exfoliation and wear, and complete loss of handles and/or applied decoration around rim (some of it possibly lost in the firing). Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Helene Dornes (Carversville, Pennsylvania), 10/16/1967. Ex-collection of A.H. Rice. Catalogue Note: Retains its original Alvin Rice catalog number (943) written in black grease pencil on underside (Rice and Stoudt 1929, p. 209). It seems likely that the piece's base flange was designed to fit into a multi-piece porch or garden vase similar to the garden furniture made by the Eberlys (Comstock 1994, p. 272).
