Stamped ”C. GAST” (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) Molded Redware Pitcher - Stamped ”C. GAST” (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) Molded Redware Pitcher Red earthenware with streaked and speckled manganese and lead glaze; tall pear-shaped low-bellied octagonal form with curved molded handle and wide octagonal foot. Stamped ”C. GAST” to underside. Mid/second half 19th century. Dimensions: 9 1/4” H, 5 7/8” D base. Condition: Heavy wear and some chipping/flaking/glaze exfoliation around spout and waist, as well as one wide shallow chip to underside of foot. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. The Sittigs (Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pennsylvania), 05/09/1976. Catalogue Note: The ”C. GAST” stamp was used by Conrad Gast (1813-1884) who began his career as a potter in 1842. His pottery was at the corner of Prince and James Streets. Most of Gast's known output today consists of molded redware such as the present pitcher. A very similar example can be seen in a Lancaster collection (Hagadorn 2007, p. 89, fig. 35). These examples seem to be copied from similar paneled examples made in Bennington, Vermont, known as the ”Tulip and Heart pattern” (Barret 1958, p. 26, pl. 24A).
