A.H. Hews & Co. (North Cambridge, MA) Redware / Terra Cotta Match Holder - A.H. Hews & Co. (North Cambridge, MA) Redware / Terra Cotta Match Holder Round plaque form with hanging hole to rear, molded in the form of a realistic cow's head, painted embellishments to surface including gold flecking behind the head and adhered rough-textured material in lower cartouche to enable match striking. Stamped ”A. H. HEWS & Co. / NO. CAMBRIDGE / MASS” to rear. Fourth quarter 19th century. Dimensions: 6 5/8” D overall. Condition: One chip and a shallow flake to outermost top edge, otherwise excellent. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased sometime between 1972 and 1975 (source not recorded). Catalogue Note: The Hews pottery sold an extensive line of unglazed redware in dozens of forms for decoration at home, but also sold decorated ware of their own. Their products after the Centennial embody the industry-wide shift among established redware potteries of the era - from utilitarian products towards art pottery, especially painted in colors, like the present example (Watkins 1950, pg. 222-223). Auctioneer's Note: We are thrilled to bring the Stradling Study Collection to market in partnership with Connor Rush of SFR Antiques, whose help and scholarship enabled the completion of this session's catalogue.
