Two Signed American Yellowware Pottery Food Molds - Two Signed American Yellowware Pottery Food Molds Clear glaze over yellowware body, round forms, the smaller example (molded to form a bunch of grapes and leaves) stamped ”I. W. CORY / TRENTON, / N. J.” to underside, the larger (molded with fluting around a swirled recessed center) stamped twice ”PHOENIX POTTERY / S. & Co.”. Second half 19th century. Dimensions: Cory: 1 1/2” H, 3 3/4” D rim. Phoenix: 2 1/4” H, 4” D rim. Condition: Cory: Undamaged. Phoenix: 1 1/2” hairline from rim, chipping to foot and rim, and baked-on stains/residue throughout interior. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Cory: Purchased in June 1982 (source not recorded). Phoenix: Purchased at Renninger's Antique Market (Denver, Pennsylvania), 09/04/1977. Catalogue Note: The ”I.W. CORY” mark was apparently used by Ira W. Cory, who ran the Mill Street Pottery in Trenton NJ from 1868 to 1871 (Goldberg 1998, p. 36). The Phoenix Pottery (in Phoenixville, PA) was operated by W.A.H. Schreiber from 1867 to 1876. Barber and James both state that under Schreiber's tenure the factory made Rockingham and yellowware as well as figural ”terra cotta” decorations, among other more ambitious types of pottery (Barber 1909, p. 267; James 1945, p. 71). After Schreiber moved on, the Phoenixville Pottery would change hands a number of times and eventually become Griffen, Smith & Hill (makers of the famed Etruscan Majolica).
