American Yellowware Nappy / Dish with Relief Decoration from Pressed Lacy Glass Plate - American Yellowware Nappy / Dish with Relief Decoration from Pressed Lacy Glass Plate Lead-glazed yellowware shaped in a shallow round form and impressed with a pattern to its top surface, plus the source for said pattern: a lead glass lacy dish embossed with leafy feathers between two-sided trefoil devices and flowers around cavetto, central design featuring a pointed rosette broken up by oak leaves (attributed to Boston & Sandwich Glass Co.). Glass dish circa 1830-1845, yellowware dish probably a bit later. Dimensions: Pottery dish: 9 1/8” D. Glass dish: 6 3/8” D. Condition: Pottery dish: Virtually undamaged with some roughness/shallow flaking to top edge of rim. Glass dish: Excellent condition with minor losses to several scallops at outer edge of rim. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Pottery dish: Richard A. Bourne Co., Inc., 05/06/1987. Ex-collection of William J. Elsholz (retains sticker). Glass dish: Purchased from John R. Tompkins, 11/12/1993. Catalogue Note: Diana's fascinating ”Crossovers” article conceptually illustrates the technique used to elevate this otherwise-plain yellowware dish into a truly ”fancy” object. She applauds the potter's choice to requisition a piece of early American pressed glass embossed on its underside in ”sharp-edged high relief” for a new decorative purpose - pressed straight into the soft clay to create the design seen here (Stradling 2011, p. 29).
