Stamped ”BALLARD & BROTHERS” (Burlington, VT) Rockingham-Glazed Relief-Molded Stoneware Pitcher - Stamped ”BALLARD & BROTHERS” (Burlington, VT) Rockingham-Glazed Relief-Molded Stoneware Pitcher Thick syrupy brown Rockingham-type glaze over buff stoneware body; compressed round form with high shoulder relief-molded with a foliate-lined border above conventional hunting scenes (hounds taking down a boar on one side, hounds taking down a stag on the other) associated with Greatbach, applied hound handle, stamped ”BALLARD & BROTHERS / BURLINGTON, VT” to underside. Circa 1850s. Dimensions: 9 1/8” H, 5 1/2” D base. Condition: Excellent condition overall with some wear to high points of decoration and below spout, plus shallow chipping/bruising to foot and two rim flakes. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Marvin Hahn, 09/24/1977. Catalogue Note: This company's history is hard to trace, but it seems to have been organized in Burlington sometime during the early 1850s (Watkins 1950, p. 150). A price list from the firm, dated 1853, was sold in Crocker Farm's July 22nd, 2017 auction as lot 239. Fascinatingly, it describes the company's Rockingham as ”Fancy Pressed Ware” and illustrates a pitcher under this heading of identical form to the present example (but with the relief-molded design not shown).
