Rare Sheet of 19th C. Earthenware / Redware Pottery buttons, possibly Norwalk, Connecticut - Rare Sheet of 19th C. Earthenware / Redware Pottery buttons, possibly Norwalk, Connecticut A group of pottery buttons in diverse styles including lead-glazed agateware examples in several colors, buff earthenware examples with enamel painting, relief-molded examples with star and floral designs, etc., many with stamped brass backings and various metal loops attached. All held onto a pale blue sheet of cardstock via twisty ties punched through the paper. Probably Connecticut, possibly Norwalk. Early to mid 19th century. Dimensions: Buttons: 3/8” D smallest, 1” D largest. Sheet: 8 1/2” x 11 1/2”. Condition: Most undamaged, some with only minor wear and scuffing, others with shallow chipping or rough molded edges, a few with cracked surfaces or severe glaze imperfections. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Catalogue Note: Button production in Norwalk is discussed by Lura Woodside Watkins in her book ”Early New England Potters and their Wares”, where buttons of ”mixed color and of two bodies” are described as being made by multiple firms (Watkins 1950, pg. 205-206). Examples from her collection are in the Smithsonian, all under accession number ”230433”.
