S. Risley (Norwich, Connecticut) attributed Relief-Molded Rockingham-Glazed Stoneware Pitcher - S. Risley (Norwich, Connecticut) attributed Relief-Molded Rockingham-Glazed Stoneware Pitcher Honey-glazed exterior with buff-glazed interior lining, pear-shaped body relief-molded with a ”Hanging Game” motif featuring cartoonishly-modeled birds and rabbits strung up over a reeded bark-textured background, and a small dog below the design, applied molded angular handle, unmarked base. Third quarter 19th century. Dimensions: 9” H, 6 1/2” D foot. Condition: Excellent condition with scuffing to high points of body and some minor roughness/glaze exfoliation along top surface of rim. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Ron DeCarolis (New London, Connecticut), 09/18/1976. Catalogue Note: A very similarly-molded example, which was formerly in the Jay & Emma Lewis collection, can be found at the University of Richmond Museums, where it is object no. ”R2012.01.169”. Lura Woodside Watkins briefly discusses Risley's production of Rockingham ware in her book ”Early New England Potters and their Wares” and states that the firm started producing molded ware in 1855. She further states that the ware is often a ”lighter and brighter tone than the usual Rockingham”, which is half true for this example (Watkins 1950, pg. 189-190). It is worth pointing out the unusual glazing on the piece, with the more vibrant brown glaze reserved for the exterior only, and a paler brown glaze lining the interior and covering the base. The same very unusual dual-glaze treatment can be seen on a signed Risley corn pitcher sold as lot 127 in Crocker Farm's Fall 2025 auction. Both pitchers share the very thick and lustrous Rockingham glaze which results from glazing the ware in this style.
