Stamped ”J.B. PATTERSON FIRE CLAY WARE MANUFACTORY” (Pottsville, PA) Molded Earthenware / Redware - Stamped ”J.B. PATTERSON FIRE CLAY WARE MANUFACTORY” (Pottsville, PA) Molded Earthenware / Redware Sugar Bowl Dark orange to buff earthenware body coated in streaked manganese and lead glazes; octagonal footed form molded after refined English earthenwares of the period, with applied scrolling shell-form handles. Stamped ”J. B. PATTERSON, / FIRE CLAY WARE / MANUFACTORY, / POTTSVILLE, PA.” to underside. Fitted with a period but technically non-matching lid with a punched hole (indicating original use on a teapot). Second half 19th century. Dimensions: 5” H without cover, 7 1/2” H with cover, 4” D base. Condition: Bowl: Heavy overall wear including glaze exfoliation around handles, a base edge flake, and severe staining. Lid: Broken in half and glued; also has a make-do replacement finial composed of turned wood attached via a metal screw through the break. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. The Sittigs (Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pennsylvania), 05/06/1979. Catalogue Note: One of only a few signed pieces known from this obscure firm - for another, see an interesting square jar sold at Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates (T/A GVA) on June 24th, 2005. A similarly-styled coffee pot has also been published (McAllister 2003, p. 29). Almost nothing is known about the factory or its products outside of the research collected by Mildred V. Hardcastle which has been quoted in other publications (Lehner 1988, p. 57). Unfortunately a copy of Mrs. Hardcastle's article could not be located prior to the publishing of this catalogue.
