Rockingham-Glazed Relief-Molded ”LIBERTY” Pitcher, Probably New Jersey - Rockingham-Glazed Relief-Molded ”LIBERTY” Pitcher, Probably New Jersey Deep brown Rockingham glaze over buff-colored yellowware body, pear-shaped with molded design either side featuring Lady Liberty standing draped in an American flag above a banner proclaiming ”LIBERTY” and surrounded by thirteen five-pointed stars; applied ear-shaped handle with pointed thumbrest, plain oval foot with unmarked underside. Circa 1870s. Dimensions: 8” H. Condition: Heavy wear including exfoliation to glaze especially around the stars, and moderate chipping to rim especially around spout. Catalogue Note: A related teapot is known from archaeologically-excavated sherds associated with Trenton NJ's Speeler Pottery Co. circa 1872 to 1878 (Stradling 2005, p. 83). For a marked piece of Speeler pottery in this sale - a relief-molded anchor pitcher - see lot 76. The anchor pitcher shares its overall pear-shaped form with the present pitcher as well as its handle style. The dating suggests this pitcher may have been designed in connection with the Centennial.
