Stamped ”S.P. Co.” (Speeler Pottery Co., Trenton NJ) Rockingham-Glazed Relief-Molded Anchor Pitcher - Stamped ”S.P. Co.” (Speeler Pottery Co., Trenton NJ) Rockingham-Glazed Relief-Molded Anchor Pitcher Mottled brown Rockingham glaze over yellowware body; pear shaped with molded design either side featuring an anchor and chain with large acanthus leaf below spout and handle, stamped ”S.P. Co.” to underside. Circa 1872-1878. Dimensions: 7 7/8” H. Condition: Excellent condition overall with moderate wear to high points of decoration especially along anchors' lower arms, plus other scattered glaze flakes including three flakes to rim. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Robert A. Ellison, Jr. (New York), 01/31/2007. Catalogue Note: The anchor pitcher's design originated in Trenton NJ in the late 1860s (Liebeknecht 2014, p. 1). The design saw widespread success in America, eventually being made in various styles by a number of factories up and down the east coast, and probably elsewhere too. The Speeler pottery, also known as the ”Assunpink Pottery”, was founded by Henry Speeler in Trenton, NJ around 1860. His sons joined him in the business around 1868 and the firm was renamed ”Henry Speeler & Sons”. Henry died in 1871, and the firm was reorganized by his sons as the ”Speeler Pottery Co.” starting in 1872. That firm was ”gone out of existence” by 1878 and the property was sold to a group of investors led by James Carr, who very briefly operated a pottery at the site before selling out to Burgess & Campbell's International Pottery Co. (Goldberg 1998, pg. 20-21).
