Swan Hill Pottery (South Amboy, NJ) attributed Flint-Enamel / Rockingham Glazed Anchor Pitcher - Swan Hill Pottery (South Amboy, NJ) attributed Flint-Enamel / Rockingham Glazed Anchor Pitcher Excellent blue and brown ”flint enamel” coloration with good mottling throughout the clear lead glaze; flattened pear-shaped body relief-molded on either side with an anchor and chain motif, angular molded handle with pointed thumbrest, acanthus leaf embellishment below handle and spout, white-glazed interior, unmarked base. Applied presentation lettering for ”H. W. BEEBE” below the spout. Late 19th century. Dimensions: 10 1/2” H. Condition: Good condition with a couple shallow flakes to the rim's top edge, a 2” vertical hairline in the spout, and a small sealed U-shaped network of hairlines to waist on proper left side. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Barry Sheldon (Manchester, Connecticut), 10/07/1979. Catalogue Note: The anchor pitcher's design originated in Trenton NJ in the late 1860s (Liebeknecht 2014, p. 1). The design saw widespread success in America, eventually being made in various styles by a number of factories up and down the east coast, and probably elsewhere too. The present example is attributed to South Amboy, NJ on the basis of the applied presentation lettering, the glaze colors, and the white interior lining. These traits show up on other ”late” Swan Hill pieces, perhaps from the 1880s onwards. It is likely that the Swan Hill workmen continued making pottery with similar traits at subsequent factories they were affiliated with, including the Bay View Pottery, the Providence Pottery, and probably the pottery of J. L. Rue & Co. in nearby Matawan.
