New Jersey Flint-Enamel / Rockingham-Glazed Figural Footwarmer, Probably James Carr at the Swan Hill - New Jersey Flint-Enamel / Rockingham-Glazed Figural Footwarmer, Probably James Carr at the Swan Hill Pottery Excellent spattled blue and brown coloring over a patchy clear lead glaze; unusual bottle-form body molded as a stylized fish with open mouth forming the spout and scales textured throughout the surface, also molded with impressions of feet on the fish's back, unmarked base. Attributed to James Carr at the Swan Hill Pottery in South Amboy, circa 1852-1854. Dimensions: 10 1/8” H, 9” W across base. Condition: Undamaged with minor overall wear especially to base/underside. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Antique Associates at West Townsend, 09/27/1990. Catalogue Note: Attributable to Carr on the basis of a related example shown at the 1947 Newark Museum exhibition, where it was cat. no. 155. The aforementioned example had been passed down in Carr's family. It was donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art prior to 1947, but it does not seem to be in the museum's possession anymore. However, another example was donated by Jay and Emma Lewis in 2008, presumably to fill this hole in the museum's collection - the ex-Lewis collection replacement can be seen under the accession number ”2008-25-22” at the PMA. Another example, which shares the present example's blue ”flint enamel” coloring, can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Unfortunately it carries an erroneous Bennington attribution. Its accession number is ”B.57.39.A, .B”.
